Birds
This body of work developed when demonstrating what you can do with a humble pinch pot ball, I did not anticipate how it would evolve. Birds are an interface with nature, the constant of birds and birdsong remind us we are part of the natural world, with a part to play in nature as opposed to living outside of it. For many of us, birds are the wild things we have the most contact with, whether pigeons in the town square, that scary seagull who tries to steal your chips, ducks and other birds we deem good which we feed, or the ominous lone magpie who receives many salutations. |
I make ceramic birds mostly from my imagination, giving them qualities and characteristics which make them unique, creating species, the monocle wearing birds for example. The pieces are made from vessels, as birds are also vessels for our imagination. From the beginning of time we have been captivated by birds, by their ability to fly, to navigate great distances, and I think above all by their ability to sing.
